Nevada Dental Sleep owner and CCSD parent, Dr. Jerry Hu, was recently featured on NBC Local News 6 discussing the potential benefits of later school start times for students. The Clark County School District is currently considering pushing back start times next year, and Dr. Hu shared his expertise on how this could positively impact the community.

According to Dr. Hu, adjusting school schedules could have a significant effect on students’ concentration and overall academic performance. “The first thing it’ll affect is your concentration, and that, you know, entails their grades and their school performance,” he explained. He also noted that sufficient sleep supports children who participate in sports and other extracurricular activities, impacting everything from hormones to immune system function.

Dr. Hu emphasized that extra sleep often leads to better results. Highlighting the importance of sleep for children, Dr. Hu pointed out that kids generally need more rest than adults. While adults require around 7.5 to 8 hours per night, children benefit from nine to ten hours of quality sleep to support healthy growth, learning, and development.

“You look at some of these European countries that really focus on this, in particular, like Denmark and those areas, and even some Scandinavian countries, Sweden and whatnot, when they do these changes, oh my goodness, their score, school performance, their test scores, go up.”
